Terms of Service

The short version: Guardian is pre-alpha software that helps protect your boat or RV, but it is an aid — not a guarantee, and not a substitute for good seamanship, winterization, or insurance.

These terms are an agreement between you and SC4 Technologies LLC (“we”, “us”) covering the Boat & RV Guardian apps, the hosted cloud service, and this website (together, “Guardian”). By using Guardian you agree to them. Questions: [email protected].

1. What Guardian is — and isn’t

Guardian monitors off-the-shelf sensors on your boat or RV and can command a water valve, including an automatic flood shutoff. It is a risk-reduction aid. It depends on third-party hardware, your network, power, and (for remote features) internet connectivity — any of which can fail.

2. Pre-alpha software

Guardian is under active early development. Features documented as working are real, but expect rough edges, fast-moving releases, and occasional breaking changes. Anything marked “coming soon” is planned, not shipped, and may change or never ship.

3. Your account and your hardware

  • Guardian requires an account. Keep its information accurate and its credentials secure — you are responsible for what happens under it.
  • The sensors, valves, and gateways are third-party products you buy and own. Their manufacturers’ own terms and warranties apply to the hardware; we are not the manufacturer and make no warranty for it.
  • You are responsible for installing hardware correctly and safely for your vehicle.

4. Plans, trials, and billing

  • The core app is free. Optional hosted plans (Basic, Premium) attach to a vehicle and add remote features at that vehicle’s tier.
  • Each vehicle can take one free Basic trial. It lapses back to Free automatically unless you continue.
  • You can cancel a plan at any time; the vehicle drops back to the Free tier and keeps working there.
  • Hosted history beyond your tier’s retention window is deleted automatically; downgrading a plan shortens that window.

5. Sharing and alerts to others

  • If you invite someone to your vehicle, you choose their role and are responsible for that choice. You can remove them at any time.
  • You may only add alert addresses (email, SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram) that you have the right to use. Third-party email recipients must confirm before delivery, and every alert email carries an unsubscribe link.
  • Messaging is rate-limited to prevent abuse; we may suspend delivery to addresses that bounce, complain, or unsubscribe.

6. Acceptable use

Don’t use Guardian to break the law, to monitor a vehicle or send messages to people without the authority to do so, to probe or disrupt the service, or to resell the hosted service.

Guardian’s apps and server software are proprietary to SC4 Technologies LLC and are not offered for self-hosting. Using Guardian gives you the right to run the apps and use the hosted service under these terms — not to copy, modify, or redistribute the software.

7. Disclaimer of warranties

GUARDIAN IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE”, WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT ALERTS WILL BE DELIVERED, THAT SHUTOFF COMMANDS WILL SUCCEED, OR THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE.

8. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, SC4 TECHNOLOGIES LLC WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR PROPERTY DAMAGE, WATER DAMAGE, OR OTHER LOSS ARISING FROM USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE GUARDIAN. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM IS LIMITED TO THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US FOR THE SERVICE IN THE TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM (OR US$50 IF YOU HAVE PAID NOTHING). Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

9. Termination

You can stop using Guardian at any time — full account deletion is built into the app, and it removes your account along with the data we hold for it. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms.

10. Changes

We may update these terms as the product evolves; material changes will move the date at the top and be noted in release notes. Continuing to use the hosted service after a change means you accept it.

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Ohio, excluding its conflict-of-law rules.
